Footers are almost always forgotten about during the design process, we even didn’t impliment a footer upon the launch of our showcase blog.
(I know this may sound ironic, but we now have a footer implimented on our developer enviroment!)
Why do you even need a footer? The footer lets your vistor know that the page of content has finished, but with using WordPress widgets you are able to provide extra resources such as recent posts, coments and also a contact form.

WordPress footer is a good place for displaying some additional information. I see some websites create widget areas for footer as in these tutorials. Good list :)
